The British Open second-round leader market takes center stage this week as the world's best golfers head to Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, for the final major championship of the season.

The year's final major gets underway this week as golf's elite battle for the Claret Jug at one of the sport's most celebrated links venues. Royal Birkdale presents a stern test with its challenging design, ever-changing seaside winds, fast-running fairways, and deep, punishing bunkers. Success demands accuracy off the tee, disciplined course management, and imaginative shot-making. Those unique conditions make the second-round leader market especially appealing, as players who capitalize on favorable early weather and find their rhythm quickly can build a significant edge before conditions become more difficult.

β›³ Who'll lead the British Open after Round 2?

Scottie Scheffler (+1200)

Scottie Scheffler sits at 2-under, just three shots off the lead after the opening round, making him an excellent pick to lead the tournament after Friday's action. The World No. 1 continues to strike the ball at an elite level, and his consistency from tee to green gives him plenty of birdie opportunities.

Scheffler has repeatedly proven he can string together low rounds at major championships, especially when chasing early leaders. If he sharpens his putting and takes advantage of calmer morning conditions, he's well positioned to climb the leaderboard and claim the second-round lead.

Bryson DeChambeau (+1250)

Bryson DeChambeau enters the second round at 3-under, sitting two shots behind the leader after Thursday's opening round. His combination of power and improved touch around the greens makes him a dangerous contender on any course, including challenging links layouts.

DeChambeau has shown he can produce low rounds in major championships when his driver is clicking, creating plenty of birdie chances. If he continues to capitalize on scoring opportunities while avoiding costly mistakes in the coastal winds, he'll have an excellent chance to surge up the leaderboard and finish Friday as the second-round leader.

Robert MacIntyre (+1425)

Robert MacIntyre heads into the second round at 3-under, just two shots off the lead, putting him in prime position to top the leaderboard by Friday evening. The Scottish star is one of the strongest links golfers in the field, with the creativity and shot-making ability needed to thrive in difficult coastal conditions.

His confidence on this style of course allows him to stay patient while taking advantage of scoring chances. If MacIntyre continues striking the ball cleanly and maintains a steady putter, he has every opportunity to emerge as the tournament's second-round leader.

⏰️ When are second-round leader bets paid out?

The second-round leader market is decided once everyone in the field has completed their first 36 holes. This may be Saturday morning in the event of a weather or darkness delay.

β›… What to consider when betting on the second-round leader

Betting on the second-round leader of any golf tournament is far different than betting on the tournament winner or any prop market.

Here are the factors I always consider with my second-round leader picks:

  • Tee times
  • Weather
  • Course history
  • Round 1 scoring average
  • Recent form
  • Key stats for the week

The second-round leader betting market is much more volatile than the 72-hole event. As such, the odds for the tournament favorites are higher in this market, and the odds for the long shots are generally slightly shorter when betting on the 18-hole sample.

Early tee times are typically best to target for your picks. Courses are often at their softest and easiest, with no divots in the fairways or wear on the greens. But the weather can significantly change that line of thought. Monitor the weatherto be sure your desired golfers will be dodging the worst of the rain and wind, should any be in the forecast.

I also greatly reduce my timeframe when looking at recent performance entering Friday's second round.
