The 2026 Masters tees off at 7:40 a.m. ET at Augusta National Golf Course. I, for one, cannot wait.
More than the thrill of seeing the hallowed grounds covered in magnolias, more than seeing the best of the best in the 91-man field, and more than the chaos and disaster that looms around every dogleg, I'm most excited to sweat out some Masters first-round leader predictions. And I'll be looking to start that sweat with the opening 7:40 a.m. Masters tee time.
We're making our first-round picks based on the best odds from Kalshi, one of our best prediction market apps. Track the live odds throughout Thursday's opening round.

β³ Who'll lead the Masters after Round 1?
Haotong Li (0.7%)
Tee time: 7:40 a.m. ET | Group: John Keefer
This might be my new favorite among my Masters long-shot picks.
Haotong Li, in his first season as a full-time PGA Tour member, started strong in his first three events. He broke 70 in each of those opening rounds, including a 66 in the season-opening Sony Open.
He's long off the tee, and his already sharp approach game will benefit even more from the soft morning greens.
Most of all, I'm attracted to Li's 7:40 a.m. tee time in the opening 2-man group alongside John Keefer. They'll play fast and without the fanfare and buzz of the later featured groups.
Patrick Reed (2%)
Tee time: 9:55 a.m. ET | Group: Tommy Fleetwood and Akshay Bhatia
Reed certainly will be facing more crowd attention than Li and Keefer, but that tends to suit Captain American just fine.
The former Masters champion finished alone in third last year for his best result since that victory at ANGC, though he did finish T-12 or better in four of his last five appearances.
Reed has two victories this year on the DP World Tour. He's heavily featured in my Masters parlay picks, and even backed by Claude in our Masters AI predictions.
Bryson DeChambeau (4.7%)
Tee time: 10:07 a.m. ET | Group: Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele
Predicting the first-round leader of the Masters isn't as easy as just hoping everything plays out the same as it did the year before. But course history is a proven commodity at Augusta National, and it's impossible to not be infatuated with DeChambeau's current form and swagger, last year aside.
He already has the second-best Masters win probability in this market and sits second in my Masters power rankings, but I think he should be much closer to Scottie Scheffler's 6.1% chance of holding the Round 1 lead. Take the value and run with this potential Masters champion.
⏰️ When are first-round leader wagers paid out?
The first-round leader market is decided once everyone in the field has completed their first 18 holes. This may be Friday morning in the event of a weather or darkness delay.

π Masters first-round leader history
Here are the recent first-round leaders of the Masters, along with the tournament winner and their Round 1 scores:
| Year | First-round leader (score, finish) | Tournament winner (first-round score) |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Justin Rose (-7, 2) | Rory McIlroy (E) |
| 2024 | Bryson DeChambeau (-7, T-6) | Scottie Scheffler (-6) |
| 2023 | J. Rahm, B. Koepka, V. Hovland (-7, 1, T-2, T-7) | Jon Rahm (-7) |
| 2022 | Sungjae Im (-5, T-8) | Scottie Scheffler (-3) |
| 2021 | Justin Rose (-7, 7) | Hideki Matsuyama (-3) |
The first-round leader market at the Masters has been fascinating over the past five years. Only Jon Rahm went wire-to-wire (in 2023). Rory McIlroy mounted the largest 54-hole comeback of any winner, as he was seven strokes back after Round 1 last year. Justin Rose twice held the solo first-round lead. He has a 3.1% chance at Kalshi to do it again this year.
βοΈThursday's weather at Augusta National Golf Course
Here is today's Masters weather report from Accuweather:
| Metric | Forecast |
|---|---|
| π‘οΈ Temp. | 65 degrees in the morning, high of 73 in the afternoon |
| π¨ Wind | 9 mph with gusts up to 17 mph |
| π§οΈ Precipitation | Sunny with 11% cloud cover; 2% precipitation |
| βοΈ Humidity | 29% humidity |
Weather will not be an issue on Thursday at Augusta National. The temperature will be the coolest of the week on Thursday morning, meaning early starters will benefit from the greens being at their softest. The difference in wind speed throughout the day will be negligible.
I'm giving a slight preference to the morning wave on Thursday while eyeing the softer greens and fairways.
β What to consider when trading on the first-round leader
The first-round leader market of any golf tournament is far different than wagering on the tournament winner or any prop market.
Here are the factors I always consider with my first-round leader picks:
- Tee times
- Weather
- Course history
- Round 1 scoring average
- Recent form
- Key stats for the week
The first-round leader market is much more volatile than the 72-hole event. As such, the odds for the tournament favorites are higher in this market, and the odds for the long shots are generally slightly shorter when trading on the 18-hole sample.
Early tee times are typically best to target for your picks. Courses are often at their softest and easiest, with no divots in the fairways or wear on the greens. But the weather can significantly change that line of thought. Monitor the weather to be sure your desired golfers will be dodging the worst of the rain and wind, should any be in the forecast.
I also greatly reduce my timeframe when looking at recent performance entering Thursday's first round.

βοΈ How to trade on the Masters
What is Kalshi and how does it work?
Kalshi is a U.S.-regulated prediction market exchange overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), where users trade on real-world outcomes using simple yes/no contracts. For the 2026 Masters, that means markets tied to questions like whether Scottie Scheffler wins at Augusta, if Rory McIlroy finally completes the career Grand Slam, or which player claims the low round of the tournament.
Each contract pays out $1 if the outcome happens and $0 if it does not. If you think Scheffler will win the Masters and buy a "Yes" contract at 30 cents, that implies a 30% chance. If Scheffler wins, the contract settles at $1, netting you 70 cents per share. If he doesn't, it settles at $0.
Prices fluctuate in real time as users buy and sell, so the market reflects the crowd's collective expectations - and shifts with every round, every leaderboard move, and every weather delay across four days at Augusta National.
How does Kalshi differ from sports betting?
Sportsbooks vs. Kalshi - the key differences
If you've ever placed a bet at a sportsbook, Kalshi will feel familiar but work differently in a few important ways.
At a traditional sportsbook, you bet against the house at a fixed line. The book sets the odds, builds in a margin (the "vig"), and you either win or lose at those terms. For the Masters, that might look like Scheffler at +300 to slip on the green jacket - meaning a $100 bet returns $300 profit if he wins.
On Kalshi, there is no house. You trade directly with other users in an open market. Prices are expressed in cents as implied probabilities rather than traditional American odds. A contract priced at 20 cents implies a 20% chance of winning - the same information as American odds, just presented differently. There is no vig baked into a fixed line; instead, the spread between the buy and sell price is how the market operates.
The flexibility advantage
The other major difference is flexibility. A sportsbook bet is locked in once placed. On Kalshi, you can sell your contract at any time before the tournament ends - locking in a profit if the price has moved in your favor, or cutting your losses if your contender shoots himself out of contention with a double on Amen Corner. This makes Kalshi feel less like gambling and more like trading, where strategy and timing matter as much as picking the right champion.
Why trade on Kalshi instead of a sportsbook?
Four key advantages
Kalshi offers four key advantages for Masters prediction markets:
- Flexibility: Unlike a locked-in sportsbook futures bet, you can sell your contract at any time before the outcome is decided β especially valuable across four unpredictable days at Augusta, where leaderboards can swing dramatically after every round
- Transparency: You trade against other users in an open market, which can surface better value than a sportsbook futures line where the house always has an edge
- Federal regulation: As a CFTC-regulated exchange, your funds are held in a secure, audited environment - a level of oversight most offshore sportsbooks don't offer
- Wider availability: Kalshi operates in many U.S. states where traditional sports betting is not yet legal, making Masters markets accessible to a broader audience
