📡 SBR Edge: PGA Championship picks

Major championship season continues as the world’s best golfers descend upon Newtown Square, Pa, for the 108th PGA Championship at the historic Aronimink Golf Club. The golf world turns its attention to a venue with virtually no major championship history for the current field, creating a wide-open betting board and a fresh puzzle for handicappers to solve. Let’s break down my favorite outright winner, sleeper pick, and top-finisher bets for the second major of the year.

🏆 PGA Championship pick to win: Rory McIlroy (+850)

Rory has arguably the highest ceiling at Aronimink. His high-launch driving fits this long Par 70 perfectly, and after a warm-up T-19 at the Truist Championship, he's historically thrived on classical northeastern layouts. Not to mention the man is in solid form heading into this week. McIlroy already has four top-25 finishes this year (yes, we all know he's a back-to-back Masters champion to boot) and shot 18-under the last time he played at Aronimink Golf Club in 2017-18 for the BMW Championship. Fire him up.

🎯 PGA Championship sleeper picks

Shane Lowry (+8000)

This is a massive discrepancy price. Lowry is a major champion (2019 Open) who excels in difficult conditions. On a course where the rough is unflinchingly difficult, Lowry's patient scrambling and mid-iron play make him a top-tier sleeper. Lowry has been hovering as a potential breakout candidate with four top-25 finishes and two top-10 finishes - I love him at +8000 this week.

Gary Woodland (+10000)

Don’t look now, but Woodland is quietly piecing together an impressive comeback season at the perfect time heading into Aronimink. While most bettors are focused on the star power near the top of the board, Woodland brings an outstanding statistical fit for this course. He also has valuable experience at Aronimink after posting a T-12 finish at the 2018 BMW Championship, carding four straight rounds of 67 or lower. On a lengthy, challenging parkland setup that rewards major winners capable of navigating thick rough and massive greens, Woodland’s recent form makes him a tremendous value play. Personally, I’d have this long shot priced much closer to +8000 entering the week.

🔥 My favorite PGA Championship bet

Cameron Young top 5 finish (+270)

You'd have a tough time finding many golfers playing better than Young at the moment. He's recorded seven consecutive top-25 finishes dating back to the Genesis Invitational, making his current odds feel longer than they should be - I expected something closer to +200. Young ranks inside the top 10 in both strokes gained: off the tee and strokes gained: total, a combination that should put him firmly in contention for a top-five finish this week.

⚖️ How I'm handicapping the PGA Championship

While recent PGA Championships have often devolved into bomb-and-gouge contests, the Gil Hanse restoration of Aronimink has narrowed landing zones and reintroduced 174 bunkers that punish sheer aggression. Consequently, I am overweighting strokes gained: approach and strokes gained: total this week.
