📡 SBR Edge: Strong Valspar Championship field creates value in betting odds

Xander Schauffele remains the favorite by the Valspar Championship odds at +1050 via DraftKings. The American comes off a third-place finish at The Players and his sharp iron game (1.88 strokes gained: approach) last week will translate equally well to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.

Akshay Bhatia's withdrawal from the 135-man field on Wednesday morning shifted the odds slightly, with Brooks Koepka among the biggest movers early this week. Bhatia was replaced by Sam Ryder.

👛 My golf betting record (March)

Here is my golf betting record in March, broken down by outright, first-round leader, and prop bets:

Bet type Record ROI
Outright 0-8-1 ❌ -5.75 units ❌
First-round leader 0-6 ❌ -2.25 units ❌
Props 4-14-2 ❌ -7.32 units ❌

Fortunately, my Players Championship bets on Collin Morikawa (+2200) were all voided and refunded as bonus bets as he withdrew after playing just a single hole. Unfortunately, the same wasn't done for Ludvig Aberg (+2800) after he developed a case of the yips over his final nine holes of the "fifth major".

⚖️ How I'm betting the Valspar Championship

I come into the Valspar Championship licking my wounds a bit after Ludvig Aberg's back-nine collapse at TPC Sawgrass. His failure at TPC Sawgrass dropped me to 0-9 on PGA Tour outright picks this month, and I'm minus-15.32 units overall in March. Blech.

But that's golf betting.

The good news? With no Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy in the field this week, everyone has odds of +1100 or longer. Let's pick a winner and get back in the black for the PGA Tour season. I'll be sprinkling my outright picks this week throughout the oddsboard.

This is one of the strongest fields this event has hosted in recent years, but four of the past five winners had pre-tournament odds of at least +5000. I'll bet a couple of names near the top of the board with a full unit each, and then make a couple more outright bets than usual at odds beyond 50-1.

Course info

Known for the challenging three-hole closing stretch of the "Snake Pit" - Nos. 16-18 - Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is one of the more famous non-major venues on the PGA Tour rotation. The Larry Packard design features small greens that routinely play firm and fast. Many of the putting surfaces spill off into well-positioned bunkers protecting the edges of the greens.

Fairways are tight and well-guarded by pine trees and there are plenty of elevation changes.

📊 Key stats: Handicapping Copperhead Course

Though not as well known as The Players Championship's TPC Sawgrass, Copperhead is one of the more challenging courses used by the PGA Tour each year. Water hazards, bunkers, and tree-lined fairways limit scoring opportunities. As such, five of the last seven winning 72-hole scores were no better than -12. Sam Burns was the exception with back-to-back victories at -17.

Vijay Singh set the tournament scoring record at -18 in 2004.

Stat Category Weight Why it matters for Copperhead
SG: approach 50% Small and firm greens mean golfers must stick their approaches, especially from distance
SG: around-the-green 25% If you're not going to stick your approach shot, recovery from the spill-off areas is a must
Proximity: 175-200 yards 15% The most common approach range, with dog-legged fairways limiting driver off the tee
Driving accuracy 5% See the above: make sure you're abiding by fairway curves
Sand-save percentage 5% If you miss the green, you're likely to end up in a bunker
