Shohei Ohtani will be looking to continue his latest absurd run, but as detailed in my Venezuela vs. Japan predictions as part of our World Baseball Classic betting picks, he'll need to conquer a tough lefty.

It'll be Yoshinobu Yamamoto vs. Ranger Suarez in a top-tier pitching clash that features the World Series MVP from this past fall. Can Suarez do enough to contain the baseball-mashing behemoth that is Ohtani?

We'll see on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET when the last of the WBC quarterfinal contests begins from loanDeport Park in Miami, Fla.

💰 Venezuela vs. Japan best bet

Under 7.5 (+100)

Suarez and Yamamoto can suffocate offenses. Yamamoto allowed just 5.9 hits per nine innings in MLB last year, and there was little power generated off him. His expected slugging allowed sat at .305, according to Baseball Savant, and in the bottom 4% leaguewide. Meanwhile, Suarez's hard-hit rate given up of just 31.1% was eighth in MLB.

It's critical to remember that pitching restrictions for the quarterfinals increase, with starters permitted to throw a maximum of 80 pitches. That's getting much closer to a typical MLB start for the lethal combination of Yamamoto and Suarez.

🔥 Best Venezuela vs. Japan player prop

Yoshinobu Yamamoto to record 6+ strikeouts (-130)

Yamamoto has posted a 10.4 K/9 across two MLB seasons. Even better, he finished with a 14.7 K/9 during his last time at the WBC in 2023, unsurprisingly showing he can thrive under the international spotlight.

As always, his fastball-splitter mix is deadly, with opponents whiffing 42% of the time on the latter pitch, and recording a .187 batting average against the former.

Even Yamamoto is human at times, especially in mid-March. He showed that while issuing three walks during his only WBC appearance thus far across 2 2/3 innings. But he still tallied two strikeouts during that brief cameo.

Be confident that one of the most imposing pitchers on the planet can correct the control hiccups in a hurry, and then keep mowing down batters during a longer start on Saturday.

💣 Venezuela vs. Japan home run prediction

Seiya Suzuki home run (+550)

The lefty Suarez gave up 10 of his 14 home runs to righties last year. He also threw his sinker the most while using it 28.5% of the time against righties, and that's a pitch Seiya Suzuki regularly tattooed. He posted a 58.9% hard-hit rate against sinkers last campaign, with a .663 expected slugging.

Suzuki broadly thrives against any offspeed pitch, slugging .962 when facing those offerings last year. Suarez threw his changeup the second-most at 19.1% of the time.

Scoring will surely be limited in this game that features two starters who can suppress runs effectively, and especially homers. But if there's going to be a deep shot, Suzuki is well-positioned to supply it.

🚀 Venezuela vs. Japan same-game parlay

We're rolling with run suppression here, despite the daunting presence of Ohtani. There's no easy way to get him out, of course, but Ohtani did record a moderately more human .898 OPS against lefties last year, as opposed to 1.076 when facing a righty.

There's still enough punch elsewhere in Japan's lineup to win a close and low-scoring game. That very much includes Suzuki, who has gone deep twice during this WBC while producing a 1.571 OPS.

💵 Best Venezuela vs. Japan parlay bet

  • Japan ML (-180)
  • Under 7.5 (-105)
  • Yamamoto 6+ strikeouts (-130)

Best odds: +330 via DraftKings (0.25u -> 0.83u)

⚖️ How I'm betting Venezuela vs. Japan

I'm embracing a bit of risk while taking the Under on the total. Though there's a slightly broader offering at the best sports betting sites now during the knockout rounds, markets have generally been limited for the WBC, and I feel comfortable riding with two highly effective starters.

I would admittedly feel a little more comfortable with a higher run line, which is why my wager is a touch lower at 0.75 units. There's a whole lot of time before first pitch, so we may get our wish there given the heavily slanted action currently toward the Over (see below). But that will of course come at the cost of a less appealing price. I'm at peace with 7.5, but approach the total accordingly based on your risk tolerance.

Also, making only a sprinkle on a home run prop is always wise, but especially so in this case because both Yamamoto and Suzuki posted an HR/9 of 0.8 or lower last year.

📊 Venezuela vs. Japan odds & analysis

Here are the World Baseball Classic odds for Venezuela vs. Japan on Friday at 10:15 a.m. ET; odds via DraftKings

Market Venezuela Japan
Moneyline +145 -180
Run line +1.5 (+120) -1.5 (-150)
Over/Under Over 7.5 (-120) Under 7.5 (-105)

Japan opened as a sizeable though not overwhelming favorite, but that might be about to change soon enough. The early action through DraftKings is heavily favoring that side, with Japan getting 83% of the bets on the moneyline, and 82% on the run line.

The run line itself might not move significantly, as it'll stay in lockstep with the low total that respects the talents of the two starting pitchers, Suarez and Yamamoto. The total could move off 7.5 though, since 88% of the action is coming in on the Over. But it probably won't move enough to bring the run line along with it.

🆚 Venezuela vs. Japan starting pitchers & projected lineups

Here are the projected starting pitchers and lineups for Saturday's Venezuela vs. Japan matchup:

Position Venezuela Japan
Starting pitcher Ranger Suarez Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Key players to watch

Venezuela - Luis Arraez: Generating power has never been part of Luis Arraez's game at the MLB level, as he's recorded just 36 homers across seven seasons. Yet he's hit two during this WBC with a 1.744 OPS, far higher than Arraez's .777 in the majors.

Japan - Munetaka Murakami: You're already watching Ohtani's every move, so instead focus on an MLB rookie of the year odds contender under a bright playoff-like spotlight. Murakami has largely scuffled during the WBC thus far, but he hit 24 homers with a 1.051 OPS in Japan last season.
