The big-name pundits love the one seeds. To be fair, I like two of them, too, but we'll be highlighting more than just the favorites among my picks for March Madness.

Duke sits at the top of the board in my March Madness predictions, but behind the Blue Devils, I'm targeting a pair of longer-shot options - think the +375 range - to make the Final Four, along with a dark horse Cinderella.

🏆 Who will win March Madness 2026?

Duke to win the national championship (+390)

Playing the favorite is boring. This year, it's not a bad idea. Duke is the title favorite in Bart Torvik's projections and is one of seven teams squarely in Evan Miya's title favorites tier. There isn't a ton of value - the Blue Devils' odds of +390 (20.4%) are right about at the projected probability on some sites - but no team has the high-floor, high-ceiling combination that Duke does.

Duke ranks second in adjusted offensive efficiency and first in adjusted defensive efficiency this year. Since Feb. 1, Duke ranks fifth and second in those metrics, respectively. Rival title favorite Michigan falls from sixth and second to 12th and fifth when applying that same schedule filter. Duke is peaking at the right time and enters the tournament in far better form.

While some are concerned with the Blue Devils' draw, I'm not. When applying that schedule filter, Duke is not only the best team in the country - it's also the only team in the East in the top 10! Possible opponents include St. John's (12th), UConn (15th), and Michigan State (23rd), setting up an easier path for Duke than the other one seeds.

4️⃣ Final Four predictions 2026

See the official March Madness bracket for every team's path to the Final Four.

Michigan (-115)

Michigan was a great value play at the start of the season. Those looking to get in late may still find some value on the Final Four market: Michigan is -115 (53.5%) at BetMGM to advance that far, somewhat higher than Bart Torvik's projection (47.2%).

To make the Final Four, Michigan may need to look more like it did earlier in the season than it has lately. If that happens, this team is scary. From Nov. 1 to Feb. 1, Michigan ranked fourth in adjusted offensive efficiency and first in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Wolverines dominated inside, ranking first in 2-point percentage and second in 2-point percentage allowed.

Although Michigan hasn't maintained those rates down the stretch, playing at a fast pace and controlling the interior on both sides of the floor is a recipe for success in March.

Illinois (+360)

The further down the board, the more scheduling matters. The South is the most contested part of the bracket, boasting three of the top six teams by Bart Torvik's championship odds. Of these, Illinois stands out as the best value play to make the Final Four at odds of +360 (21.7%). Florida (+175, 36.3%) and Houston (+250, 28.8%) are both overpriced.

Illinois enters the tournament ranked second in offensive efficiency this year and since Feb. 1. While the defense is a bit of an issue, Illinois is a top-15 team by both turnover rate and a opponent free-throw rate through both samples. The Illini don't make many mistakes or cough up cheap points at the charity stripe, and they stand to benefit massively if Team Chaos sinks Florida or Houston.

Purdue (+390)

The Spoilermakers took down Michigan to win the Big Ten and claim the second seed in the West, setting them up with a possible matchup against Arizona. Like Illinois, Purdue's chances of making the Final Four in Bart Torvik's projections (25.4%) outpace their betting odds, which are +390 (20.4%), albeit by a wider margin.

I'm generally skeptical of slow-paced teams like Purdue because they can be victims of shooting variance, but since the Boilermakers lead the country in offensive efficiency since Feb. 1 due to a combination of strong 2-point and 3-point shooting, I'll let it slide to lock them in at such a friendly price.

👠 Best March Madness Cinderella pick

Saint Mary's to reach Sweet 16

The Saint Mary's Gaels got bounced early in their conference tournament, dropping them to a seventh seed. They'll take on Texas A&M before playing the winner of Houston and Idaho, likely getting the second-seeded Cougars.

I like the Gaels here for two key reasons: first, they excel at 3-point shooting and rank 13th at it on the year; second, Houston ranks 352nd in pace on the season. The combination of those factors makes the Cougars uniquely vulnerable to shooting variance.

BetMGM has Saint Mary's at +260 (27.8%) to make the Sweet 16, so let's lock this one in at +500 (16.7%) on FanDuel instead.

💡 How I'm betting March Madness 2026

Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions for March Madness.

This year, just like last year, it's hard not to like big-name, big-conference programs. It's hard to get excited about Cinderella teams like Saint Peter's in the NIL era, so don't be afraid to buy the favorites to have successful tournaments - or to cover big spreads.

For my March Madness futures, I'm limiting myself to no more than six units of action. I'd rather keep myself liquid for live betting opportunities (buy favorites who start games shooting poorly!) and closer matchups than the ones we'll see in the Round of 64.
