The countdown for the 2026 World Cup is into single digits, and its crunch time to break down all the action, analyze the groups, and get your bets in. My Group A predictions and best bets will break down all the action for Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Czechia before the action starts on June 11.

Co-host Mexico is a -115 betting favorite to capture the group. Is that a fair price? Are there other best bets to be made instead? Let's dive in.

⚽ World Cup 2026: Group A best bets

Mexico to win Group A (-115)

Look, I get it, this isn't the sexy pick to lead out with. But it's the one I'm most confident with. Right out of the gate, before we look at the games, just let it sink in that teams native to high altitudes have been found to have upwards of a 30% greater probability of winning against teams that play most of their games closer to sea level. Studies have found that each 1,000-meter increase in altitude increases the home team's goal difference by about 0.5 goals.

The opener against South Africa should be a moderately well-managed game. While there is some risk that South Africa will be able to take advantage of a roaming fullback at some point, Mexico possesses enough attacking prowess to pull off the victory. Mexico's second game against South Korea might be the group-defining game, and beating a 3-4-2-1 South Korea press will be key to the victory. Looking at Mexico's roster, I have full faith that players like Julian Quinones can help unlock the spaces opened by South Korea's high-pressing wing-backs.

Group play will wrap up with Czechia. Mexico will need to use its dominant 4-3-3 shape to handle the bulk of possession and prevent Czechia from getting dangerous corners. Its setup, coupled with high pressing, forces opponents inward, where they meet a congested midfield.

🔬 SBR EDGE

The pick: Mexico to win Group A (-115)

The why: Mexico gets the upper hand here, playing against teams that will struggle with two facets of playing at altitude: they have a distinct edge in stamina, and they also have a distinct edge in understanding ball-flight physics in the thinner air.

Market boundaries: Buy-up to: -125 | Allocation: 1.5 units

Dual forecast: Mexico 1st / South Korea 2nd (+350)

I've already broken down why Mexico will finish first, so let's have a quick dive into why South Korea should steal the second spot.

Honestly, it might come down to the second game of the whole tournament, when South Korea and Czechia tango. While Czechia could cause trouble here with set pieces (as above with Mexico), South Korea should be able to win the early tempo battle, and its 3-4-2-1 should be able to bypass Czechia's low-block setup. Lee Kang-in is a highly efficient passer (92% accuracy in Ligue 1, 95% accuracy in Champions League) and he should help find Son Heung-Min in half-spaces, effectively bypassing the low block.

🔬 SBR EDGE

The pick: Dual forecast: Mexico 1st / South Korea 2nd (+350)

The why: South Korea's 3-4-2-1 setup and quick vertical passing will be enough to cause problems for all three of their opponents. The roster is loaded with European-skill-level players who will be well-suited to grind out the points they need to finish behind Mexico.

Market boundaries: Buy-up to: +300 | Allocation: 0.25 units
