Where will LeBron James play next season?

There has been some movement in the market since Tuesday, when James had a greater than 50% chance of leaving the Lakers. The market now projects a 58% chance that he stays with the Purple and Gold.

The rest of the money is split among several teams, mainly the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. If he leaves the Lakers, the Cavaliers are viewed as his most likely destination, with the market projecting a 26% chance that he returns home.

๐Ÿ€ Who will sign LeBron James?

Here are LeBron James' most likely destinations if he leaves the Lakers (last updated May 13):

Team ๐ŸŸ๏ธ Chance ๐Ÿ“Š
Cleveland Cavaliers 26%
Golden State Warriors 9%
San Antonio Spurs 7%
New York Knicks 4%
LA Clippers 1%

Teams not listed are projected to have less than a 1% chance of landing LeBron James.

Cleveland Cavaliers (26%)

The Cavaliers are still alive in the postseason, and their chances of signing James will likely be impacted by how far they advance in the playoffs. A Cavaliers championship - they currently have an implied 1.96% chance to win the NBA Finals - would drastically lower Clevelandโ€™s chances of landing James, as the front office would likely prioritize roster continuity.

The biggest hurdle to the Cavaliers acquiring LeBron would be James Harden, who has a $42.3 million player option for next season. However, Harden is reportedly expected to decline it.

Golden State Warriors (9%)

James going to the Warriors is not a new rumor, as he has expressed a desire in the past to play alongside Stephen Curry.

The Warriors, however, are already committed to paying Curry $62.6 million, Jimmy Butler $56.8 million, and Draymond Green $27.7 million next season if he accepts his player option. Even if Green declines his option, Golden State would still struggle to create enough cap space for James, with role players like Moses Moody ($12.5 million) and Brandin Podziemski ($5.7 million) also on sizable deals.

๐Ÿšจ LeBron James' next team odds after new ESPN report

ESPN's Dave McMenamin published a report today detailing James' frustrations with the Lakers; however, the main takeaway is that he wants to stay in Los Angeles if the Lakers handle negotiations correctly.

While the report is generally a positive signal for those who already have money on "Los Angeles Lakers or Retires," it also appears to narrow his list of potential destinations - if he leaves - to the Cavaliers, Warriors, Knicks, Nuggets, and Clippers.

๐ŸŽฏ Best prediction for LeBron James' next team

(Note: My prediction was originally published on May 12, but I still recommend buying contracts at 58%.)

James already left Cleveland in 2018, and itโ€™s not like the Lakers were contenders when he teamed up with Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram. His family has lived in L.A. for nearly a decade, and his production and media company is also based in the city.

While a return to Cleveland would likely give him the best chance to win a fifth NBA championship, Iโ€™m not convinced he wants to leave L.A. at this stage of his career. The Lakers would also likely welcome him back after he helped lead them to a first-round upset over the Houston Rockets.

Prediction: LeBron James stays with Los Angeles Lakers or retires (47%)

๐Ÿ’ฐ How to use NBA prediction markets

See all of our experts' NBA picks.

What does an NBA prediction market measure?

An NBA prediction market measures the likelihood of a specific outcome - such as a player signing with or being traded to a particular team.

How do prices work?

  • Prices range from 1 cent to 99 cents
  • A 40-cent contract implies a 40% chance based on market consensus
  • If the outcome occurs, the contract settles at $1
  • If not, it settles at $0

Prices move as participants react to trade rumors, reports, and free agency developments.

Can positions be exited early?

Yes. Contracts can typically be sold before a signing is decided. That flexibility allows participants to respond to breaking news or shifts in momentum rather than holding a position until the final outcome.

How is Kalshi different from sportsbooks?

Kalshi operates as an exchange, not a house. Participants trade directly with each other, and prices are set by supply and demand instead of fixed odds.

Key distinctions include:

  • Probabilities shown in cents rather than traditional odds
  • Focus on real-world outcomes, not margins or spreads
  • Ability to adjust or close positions before resolution

Is Kalshi regulated?

Yes. Kalshi is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Market rules, settlement criteria, and contract definitions are published in advance.
