🏀 Magic vs. Pistons Prediction, Series Odds & Best Bet: 2026 NBA Playoffs Preview
Last Updated: April 19, 2026 4:51 PM EDT • 6 minute read X Social Google News Link
The Detroit Pistons (60-22) were arguably the worst team of all time two seasons ago, but they enter this year's NBA playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the East and a heavy favorite to beat the slumping Orlando Magic (43-39) in this first-round matchup.
Cade Cunningham enters his second postseason on the heels of an MVP-level campaign for the Pistons, who are priced as -500 series favorites and 8.5-point favorites to win Game 1 today at 6:30 p.m. ET (NBC) from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Meanwhile, the Magic looked sharp in their second play-in game but will need an inspired effort from All-Star forward Paolo Banchero to win their first playoff series since 2010.
Below, I break down my Magic vs. Pistons prediction with the latest series odds, team stats and analysis, prop bets, and my best bet to advance in Round 1 as part of our NBA playoff predictions.

How did the Pistons get here?
Two years ago, the Pistons had the worst record in the NBA and at one point lost 28 consecutive games - the worst in a single season and tied for the longest of all time. Cunningham helped this team turn the page last year with his first All-Star season and the team's first postseason appearance in six seasons.
The former No. 1 pick took it to a new level this year, averaging 23.9 points (16th) and 9.9 assists (second) to lead Detroit to its third 60-win season in franchise history. Cunningham's only real knock was availability: he missed 11 games with a collapsed lung but returned for the final three games of the regular season to reach 64 games and maintain award eligibility with a special exception.
He's not the only All-Star on this team with Jalen Duren (19.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG) developing into a legitimate two-way center, anchoring the league's second-ranked defense full of rangy defenders who know their role. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff doesn't have a sterling playoff resume (9-19), but he has experience on this stage and should have this young team dialed in after last year's first-round loss to the Knicks.
How did the Magic get here?
Orlando entered this season as a dark-horse candidate to play the Detroit role and grow into a top team in a wide-open Eastern Conference. Instead, injuries took their toll on this group: Franz Wagner (48), Jalen Suggs (25), and Jonathan Isaac (20) all missed at least 20 games with injury, contributing to the Magic's 7-9 run down the stretch before a polarizing showing in two play-in games.
Banchero took a step back this year with his scoring (22.2 PPG) and 3-point shooting (30.5%), and he's drawing Ben Simmons comparisons for his unwillingness or inability to shoot from distance. That's a major concern for a team that ranked 27th in 3-point shooting (34.3%) during the regular season - the worst mark for any playoff team - even after their blockbuster trade for Desmond Bane in the offseason.
Defense is still the calling card for Jamahl Mosley's group, just as it was last year, but shot creation will define how far Orlando can advance in the playoffs. Given its track record during the regular season, that's a tough bet to make.
Who's healthy and who's hurt?
After missing nearly 50 games with a high ankle sprain, Wagner hurt his knee in the play-in loss to the 76ers but returned to play 25 minutes against the Hornets. He's expected to be available for Game 1 but hasn't been the same since his return the first time. Isaac is not expected to play in this series.
Cunningham returned for the end of the regular season but played limited minutes. He should be ready for a full workload in this series, but it's at least worth monitoring.
Who decides the series?
Cunningham is the best player in this series and could put Detroit on his back in a true star turn. But I'm watching Banchero here as the "swing player" of this series.
Orlando fans have been waiting for the "old Paolo" to show up all season long, and he's been maddeningly inconsistent with flashes of brilliance and downright stunning moments of regression. He scored 25 points in that blowout win over the Hornets by getting back to what he does best: attacking downhill, drawing fouls, and finding open shooters for the kickout. But if he strays from the path ... this could get ugly.

🏆 Magic vs. Pistons series prediction and best bet

Series prediction: Pistons in 5 games (+260)
I wouldn't be surprised if this series goes anywhere from four to seven games, but I'd be awfully surprised if Detroit doesn't ultimately close it out at home in front of a fanatical crowd that has been waiting almost two decades for a series win. Cunningham is the best player in this series by a wide margin, especially with how Banchero is playing, and Orlando's streaky shooting is a tough recipe to win more than a game against one of the best perimeter defenses in the league.
Series prediction: Pistons to win series 4-1 (+260 via DraftKings)
Best bet: Cade Cunningham points leader (-150)
I don't care that this bet is at minus odds: Cunningham is here to make a statement in this series. He nearly missed out on a chance to contend for awards had he not gutted out the end of the regular season following that collapsed lung. He averaged 32.7 points in three games against Orlando and really only has to contend with Banchero in this market. I'll gladly take my chances on that matchup.
Best bet: Cade Cunningham to lead series in points (-150 via bet365)
