⚾ Best NRFI Bets Today: MLB No Run First Inning Picks for Friday, June 5
Last Updated: June 5, 2026 8:15 AM EDT • 5 minute read X Social Google News Link
Above average temperatures in many Major League Baseball cities could make for some high-scoring games, but my best NRFI picks today have identified a handful of games where there is value for scoreless first frames.
The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry has been known for its share of slugfests, but Sonny Gray’s ability to keep the ball in the yard lends value to an early pitcher’s duel. To combat two other NRFI wagers from games between AL opponents, my only YRFI bet (Yes Run First Inning, meaning at least one of the two teams will score before the second inning begins) targets the intra-city rivalry between the two teams from Los Angeles.

💰 Best NRFI bet today
Guardians vs. Rangers (8:05 p.m. ET)
- Parker Messick (2.21 ERA) vs. Kumar Rocker (3.54 ERA)
- NRFI records: Guardians (38-26) vs. Rangers (21-41)
Parker Messick followed up pitching to a 2.72 ERA in 39 ⅔ innings last year with an even better 2.21 ERA this season. Messick owns a 3.02 FIP and an elite 44.7% whiff rate on his changeup.
Messick leads a Cleveland rotation that ranks in the top 10 in ERA since May 10. But Texas’ rotation is even better in that span, ranking seventh, with the fourth-best BABIP.
Kumar Rocker has a 9.90 first-inning ERA, but the Guardians rank 23rd or worse in OPS and wRC+ against righties in road games in the last month.
📡 SBR Edge: AL ROY contender?
Messick has the third-best fWAR of all American League rookies, and the best of any non-position player.
🔥 More NRFI picks today
Mariners vs. Tigers (6:40 p.m. ET)
- Bryan Woo (3.44 ERA) vs. Framber Valdez (4.39)
- NRFI records: Mariners (26-37) vs. Tigers (33-28)
During Seattle’s season-high eight-game winning streak, which was recently snapped, it averaged 6.0 runs per game, batting .293 with an .887 team OPS and 21 home runs. Those 21 home runs were the most by any team over an eight-game stretch this season, and the Mariners’ six straight games with multiple homers landed them one shy of a franchise record.
Despite that recent offensive success, my optimism surrounding this NRFI play is that the team also pitched to a 1.92 ERA during the winning streak. In addition, Framber Valdez is an elite ground-ball pitcher, with a ground-ball rate of 58.3% or higher in seven of his nine big league seasons.
Red Sox vs. Yankees (8:10 p.m. ET)
- Sonny Gray (3.06 ERA) vs. Ryan Weathers (3.52 ERA)
- NRFI records: Red Sox (30-32) vs. Yankees (25-38)
Sonny Gray has made quality starts in three of his last four outings and lowered his ERA from 3.79 in April to 2.00 in five May appearances. He has won four straight decisions, and his hard-hit rate percentage improved drastically from 40.7% last year to 33.8% this year (the fourth-best of his career).
The former Yankee has made two quality starts in his last three times he faced his former team. Meanwhile, with Ryan Weathers on the mound, this is a rare fade of a Red Sox lineup that leads the league in batting average, wOBA, and wRC+ against left-handed pitchers in road games.

If you prefer lots of runs to no runs, my best home run predictions today highlight four players I think could go yard today
Angels vs. Dodgers (10:10 p.m. ET)
- Reid Detmers (4.63 ERA) vs. Roki Sasaki (4.59 ERA)
- YRFI records: Angels (29-32) vs. Dodgers (24-38)
Reid Detmers has been hit hard by several current Dodgers hitters, who have combined for a .274/.369/.513 slash line and five home runs (nine total extra-base hits) in 84 at-bats. Detmers is on pace for his worst ground ball rate of the last three seasons, and the Dodgers’ 37.8% hard-hit rate against southpaws over the last month is the second-best in the league.
Meanwhile, Roki Sasaki has been L.A.’s least reliable starting pitcher, even if he owns an impressive 1.80 ERA in the first inning. The Angels have averaged 6.6 runs over their last nine games, including 21 runs in a three-game series against a Rays team whose starting rotation ranks top-5 in ERA.
🚀 Best NRFI parlay today
The first three legs of this NRFI parlay all back games between two American League teams that have either all pitched well recently, or for the entire season in New York's and Seattle's cases. I am contradicting my usual thinking by backing a YRFI in an interleague game even though there isn't much familiarity between the opponents, but the Dodgers' slew of former MVPs they send to the plate in the first inning is too intimidating to oppose with a NRFI wager.

💡 How I'm betting NRFI picks today (June 5)
Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.
With my some of my MLB NRFI/YRFI plays, I am expecting regression of various levels from Sasaki's stellar first-inning ERA to Rocker's poor numbers to open games. But for all those trends I am bucking, I am also supporting trends that the NRFI is 12-0 in Messick's 12 starts, and has also cashed in five straight times that Woo has toed the rubber.
❓ NRFI betting FAQ
What does NRFI mean in baseball betting?
NRFI stands for "No Run First Inning." It's a popular MLB bet that neither team will score in the first inning of a game, and the bet settles after just six outs (three per half-inning).
What does YRFI mean?
YRFI stands for "Yes Run First Inning" - the opposite of an NRFI. This MLB prop bet cashes if there's at least one run by either team in the first inning.
What should I look for when betting NRFIs?
Each team's starting pitcher is the biggest factor in cashing a NRFI bet, but you should also focus on each team's NRFI records (home vs. away) and each lineup's first-inning tendencies. Recent form can also play a bigger role than full-season numbers.
